About us · Langflow Education Centre

Growing steadily,
reaching outward

Langflow was founded in 2004. Seeing how many children struggled with English, Miss Anna Chan — formerly Head of English at Yuet Wah College — and Langflow's other leaders decided to open an English class, bringing in and developing new approaches so that children could build listening and speaking ability early, and lose their fear of the language.

Founding

It began with a single English class

Langflow was founded in 2004. In those early tutorial classes, we saw how many children struggled with English and Mathematics. Miss Anna Chan — formerly Head of English at Yuet Wah College — and Langflow's other leaders decided to open an English class, bringing in and developing new approaches so that children could build listening and speaking ability early, and lose their fear of the language.

We have kept learning from others and adopting new teaching methods ever since, and are now members of the World Educators Association, WEA (USA).

Development

Always learning, always adopting new methods

From introducing an international phonics method, to building on Cambridge Young Learners English, to developing our own programmes — every step has been about making learning stick.

  1. 2006

    Introducing the THRASS phonics method

Miss Anna Chan travelled to Canberra, Australia, to study the THRASS phonics method and qualify as a THRASS teacher. Beyond beginning phonics instruction, she went on to develop English learning approaches suited to young children — very possibly the first person in Macau to do so.

  2. 2008

    Native-speaker teacher workshops

We began hiring native English-speaking teachers to run workshops that helped children get comfortable listening and speaking. The results were encouraging, though the format could not yet provide a consistent learning system. We may well have been the first centre in Macau teaching English entirely with native speakers.

  3. 2010

Built on Cambridge Young Learners English

Cambridge Young Learners English formally became our curriculum blueprint. Classes stayed fully English-medium and native-speaker taught, so students could settle into an English environment more naturally.

  4. 2012

    Cambridge English examinations

We began entering students for the Cambridge Young Learners English examinations.

  5. 2014

    British Council partnership

We became a British Council Addvantage partner.

  6. 2016

    Developing education technology

We joined technology companies in developing educational software.

  7. 2018

Joining the World Educators Association, WEA (USA)

We joined the World Educators Association, WEA (USA), opening a route to learn about and adopt new teaching approaches.

  8. 2019

    Our own phonics programme

Unlike other phonics methods, ours centres on applying what is learned: classroom activities build students' phonics and dictation ability together. By the end of the programme students have not only mastered phonics but accumulated a substantial English vocabulary, with marked gains in reading and writing.

  9. 2019

    Our own grammar programme

As with our phonics work, this grammar course is built around practice. Students are set challenges to complete, with second and third attempts available so they can push for their own personal best.

Community

Taking social responsibility seriously

Alongside our teaching, Langflow wants to give something back — so more people can improve their lives through education.

2019

Cross-sector work to widen access to study

We opened discussions with the Macau Wesley Social Care Association on future collaboration, and worked with Capstone College in Hong Kong to bring part of their programme to Macau — helping Filipino and other South Asian workers in Macau continue their studies and raise their qualifications at low cost, so their life in Macau is fuller and healthier.

2026

Practical home safety and childcare courses

After years of collaboration with Capstone College and the WEA, and close study of an area society badly needs yet consistently overlooks — the link between home safety and domestic help, and what parents and teachers know about caring for children — we launched a series of practical courses aimed at preventing the tragedies that come from gaps in knowledge.
